Brunello di Montalcino - Il Poggione and Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta
Peter writes, When we open wines of this caliber, naturally people tend to be impressed. Five of the wines were Brunello and people were amazed that two wineries so close to each other and using the same grape variety could produce wines so different from each other.
September 26, 2018
We began with the 2016 Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino. Rosso is the little sister of Brunello and this one was true to form. There is just a touch of oak in a soft balanced flavor profile highlighted by cherry.
The 2012 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is a classic. It is traditional in style with a combination of rich fruit, herbs, spices and flowers. The 2013 Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino by Gaja has a more modern style. Half of the wood aging this gets is in barrique which adds notes of vanilla to the cherries and spice.
We then moved on to the riservas. The 2012 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli at first was primarily balsamic. As the tasting went on this one developed into a powerful and balanced complex array of flavors and aromas. The 2013 Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino Rennina was very closed at the beginning and did not really open up until two days later. By the way we left these wines open on the table and let people taste through them for a full week. Which brings us to the intense 2013 Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille which had people shaking their heads.
All of these wines showed the typical Sangiovese note with cherry, flowers, spice, balsam, herbs and game. The 2012s were more forward and all of the Brunellos will age extremely well. They all changed and developed with the six days of being open. Tasters were very happy for the opportunity. When the tasting was over Wednesday the two favorite wines were the 2012 Il Poggione Riserva and the first 2013 Pieve Santa Restituta. All the wines were great. Thanks BZ.
