Wines of Campania

Last week’s three whites and reds were an introduction to some of the historic wines of Campania. The whites showed Campania’s three greatest grapes.
We began with the 2017 Vigne Guadagno Fiano di Avelino. The Avelino region is reputed to make the finest Fiano grapes. It showed a lithe bright character with no heaviness at all. So did the other two. The 2020 Agricola Reale Aliseo is mostly Falanghina. The wine showed great fruit character and a floral bracing acid structure. The 2021 Mastroberardino Greco di Tufo Nova Serra had beautiful aromas and flavors with depth.
All of the reds were made with the very famous Aglianico grape. The 2020 Mastroberardino Aglianico Irpinawas the most approachable with balanced structure. The 2015 Vigne Guadagno Taurasi, from Aglianico’s best-known sub-region, showed classic with bold tannin and complexity to the dark fruit, flowers, and spice. Last, we turned to old friend Patrizia who crafts her 2015 Vigne di Raito Ragis to show exuberance and terroir from her mountain vineyard.
The tasting was a good introduction for some tasters to the nature of Campanian wines. Tasters who were already familiar with them bought quite a lot.
