Great wine has been made in Campania since ancient Roman times. Today, that tradition has become healthier than ever. We will taste wines from historically established producers and wines from the new wave tonight.
Vigne Guadagno is a property in the mountains of Avellino. Brothers Giuseppe and Pasquale started by acquiring select old Tufo, Taurasi, and Avellino vineyards. The 2017 Vigne Guadagno Fiano di Avellino has a beautiful creamy texture and is still aging well. The 2015 Vigne Guadango Taurasi is made with 100& Aglianico. The wine shows red berry and black fruit in an elegant structure.
Mastroberardino is one of the oldest wineries in Campania, still family-owned, with three wineries now. The 2021 Mastroberardino Greco di Tufo Nova Serra is made at a Reiserva level. The wine has smooth round flavors and great balance. The 2020 Mastroberardino Aglianico Irpinia is made to be approachable but still has complexity.
We will show two small wineries from the mountains of the Amalfi coast. Agricola Reale is in Tramonti, which you must see to believe. Brothers Gigino and Gaetano produce concentrated wines with great aging potential from vines that average a hundred years of age and are grown like free-standing trees in 100% volcanic soil. The 2020 Agricola Reale Aliseo shows fresh flowers with lemon zest and herbs with great structure. There is a beautiful B+B and Osteria Reale, where you can taste some of the best pizza in the world. You can also find great food at L:e Vigne di Raito at the excellent agriturismo on the steep hillside. Owner Patrizia Malanga is a great winemaker and a great chef. She maintains biodiversity on the property with lemon trees, olives, herbs, and almonds. The 2015 Le Vigne di Raita Ragis is a blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso. The wine shows firm tannins and superb balance.
