Salut!
Peter writes,
In the past year or so we have been able to discover (or re-discover) some great small family producers in Italy. Wednesday we will feature three whites and three reds from these guys.
Chiari Ciavolich runs one of the best and most historic wineries in Abruzzo. The 2021 Ciavolich Pecorino Aries is dry, aromatic and flavorful. The Pecorino grape has been getting a lot of attention these days for being a great value. The Ciavolich family has been growing it since the 1300’s and they definitely overdeliver. A little further north in Umbria Leonardo Bussoletti produces some terrific low-production wines. The 2021 Bussoletti Colle Murello is made with a very special clone of Trebbiano called Spoletino It is deep, balanced, complex and unique. Then we will drop down to Sicily and visit the Benanti family winery on Mount Etna. Giuseppe Benanti is credited in large part to doing the hard work and having the vision to put Etna wines on the world map. The 2021 Benanti Etna Bianco is made with 100% Carricante. This is a white wine with a tremendous subtle character. It also ages very well.
We will begin the reds with the 2020 Benanti Etna Rosso. This is 100% Nerello Mascalese with old vine grapes on of course, volcanic soil. It will be interesting to compare this with the 2021 Fratelli Barale Langhe Nebbiolo. The Barale winery dates back to 1870 and their production is strictly traditional. This wine has surprising depth and wonderful aromatics. Last we will go to Romagna and the village of Predappio on the Tuscan border. Here, Chiara Condello grows Sangiovese and opens new doors as to what it can do. The 2020 Condello Sangiovese Predappio is ridiculously good for a very reasonable price. It, also, is still young and will age very well.
