This Week's Tasting
Make Your August Sparkle
August 14, 2019
Sparkling wine in the dog days of August? Why not? We refresh ourselves with lots of fizzies on these hot weather days. Why not wine?
This week you can splurge on six of our favorite bubbly refreshers at not -a-splurge prices. With your lighter summer meals or just by themselves.
There is an historic and very traditional frizzante red wine made in Piacenza in Emilio Romagna called Gutturnio. The 2017 Tollara Gutturnio Frizzante is made with the traditional blend of Bonarda (Croatina) and Barbera. The wine is full flavored with bright acidity and a persistent light sparkle. Tollara is owned and operated organically by the Bolzoni sisters.
There are a lot of Spanish cavas. Bodegas Bohigas, a family firm, makes one of the best at an incredible price. Traditional grapes, organic family farming, and time on the lees longer than that of many popular (and much more expensive) champagnes make for one of the best values in crisp, clean sparkling wine.
Limoux is one of the oldest regions in France making sparkling wine but is less well-known in this country. One of the best estates there is Domaine J. Laurens. One of their best wines is the single vineyard Clos des Demoiselles, a Chardonnay-Pinot Noir blend, with a bit of Chenin Blanc for added spice. It is a beautiful wine, full and rich.
Pierre Gerbais is the name of a family estate in the town of Celles sur Ouce in Champagne's Cote de Bar. Their Grains de Celles,“Grapes from Celles” is a not-so-basic basic wine. Half Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc is round and full, soft, tasty, and easy to enjoy.
