This Week's Tasting
The First Rosés of Spring - New Wines from Old Friends
May 8, 2019
Peter writes, "Giuseppe Caviola began his wine career as a consultant. Italy’s authoritative 'Gambero Rosso' recognized him Winemaker of the Year in 2002."
Some of our favorite wineries are coming out with exciting new roses this season. Those plus a couple of old favorites will strut their stuff this week.
Austrian winery, Landhaus Meyer, has made our go to Gruner Velltliner for several vintages. Like their Gruner, their new Rose is a steal. From vineyards near Vienna, it is mostly the deliciously quaffable Zweigelt grape plus a bit of Pinot Noir for savor and Cabernet to stiffen. It will lighten your palate all summer without the barest lightening of your wallet.
Both our two Provencal rose estates began as Commanderies, or forts of the medieval order of Knights Templars but they come from different subregions of Provence and have very different styles. Bargemone is in the Coteaux d'Aix . There its blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet takes on a deeply fruity aspect, rich with deeply laden fruit; its finish so ripe as to seem almost sweet.
The Commanderie de Peyrassol is in the higher uplandsalmost at the northeastern edge of Provence. Cinsault, Syrah and Grenache grown at higher altitude, make its 2018 Cotes de Provence a wine of more ethereal delicacy, even remaining full. It is a rose of unusual delicacy and finesse, one that rewards repeated tasting.
The 2018 La Spinetta Il Rose di Casanova is always one of our most popular dry roses. It is also one of the most popular in Boston restaurants and bars. We get a healthy allocation every year. We also sell out every year. It is all Sangiovese with a sophisticated and elegant style. It is even better with some light well prepared food. Giorgio and his brothers and staff were nice enough to keep the price the same as last year. A very pleasant value indeed.
We have been big fans of the wines of Negro Lorenzo since they became available. This year he has made his first Rosato. The 2018 Lorenzo Negro Rosato San Martin is all Nebbiolo from his winery in Roero. As you would expect, this is a rose that shows some spice. The wine has some depth for food yet is still very nice just for the porch or deck.
Margerum makes hand crafted wines from cooler vineyards around Santa Barbara. As its name implies, their2018 Riviera Rose is made from the standard Rhone and Provencal varieties, leaning heavily to Grenache’s broad spice. Fuller and fruitier than the others, its richness is offset by a fine edge of spicy acid.
