Popular Spanish Wines
October 31, 2018

Peter writes, "The parade long over, before you go trick or treating, take a break to try some fine Spanish wines."

Spanish Vineyard

Peter writes,

We will revisit some of the most popular types of Spanish wine. We will begin with a Cava and then a fine Albarino. Then it’s off to Rioja and Toro for mostly Tempranillo based wines.

The 2015 Naveran Dama Cava is organic and made with 85% Chardonnay and 15% Parallada. The wine spends a minimum 18 months on the lees and comes across both fresh and complex. The 2017 Forjas del Salnes Albarino is from the northernmost part of Rias Baixas over on the west coast. The combination of cool climate and sea breezes is combined with a late harvest richness to make this a very special Albarino.

For the reds we will begin with the 2014 Sierra Cantabria Rioja Crianza. The vineyards and winery are in one of the best and most beautiful locations in Rioja Alta. Here, the Eguran family makes classic Tempranillo based wines. Next up is the 2015 Maurodos Prima Toro from the Toro region. This is a blend of mostly Tempranillo with some Garnacha and is well known for being a great value.

The 2014 Marques de Murrieta Rioja Reserva is from one of the most historic estates in Rioja Alta. This is always classic. Then, speaking of history, we will then go to the 2010 La Antigua Clasico RiojaReserva. These guys have a mission to recreate Rioja as it was in the early 20th century. All the wines back then were blends of different grape varieties and made to age extremely well. This is a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Graciano from a great vintage.
