Peter writes, "Last week’s tasting was well attended and the wines were well received. We began with the 2015 Naveran Dama Cava which showed plenty of character from the Chardonnay with which it is made. If you like sparkling wine this will definitely make you happy."

He continues,

Bill S. commented that if we began all of our tastings with some bubbles it would put everyone in a good mood. The 2017 Forjas del SalnesLeirana Albarino showed clearly that you can make a serious wine with Albarino grapes. Tasters appreciated the flavors and aromas of course. Yet there were many who commented specifically on the great texture of the wine. We agree.

The 2014 Sierra Cantabria Rioja Crianza was the first red. This is a fine red for everyday drinking and showed typical cherry and spice from the Tempranillo. The second red was from the Toro region where one usually expects more heft in the wine. The 2015 Maurodos Prima Toro was surprisingly subtle at first. It took some breathing for the natural richness to appear.

The 2014 Marques de Murrietta Rioja Reserva immediately showed a lot of class. If the first two reds were Toyotas, this one is a Lexus. The wine showed great balance and texture with just enough oak coming through. The question is, was this the favorite or was it the 2010 La Antigua Clasico Rioja Reserva which followed? This was also all about class and on top of that was very interesting. A lot of tasters went back to try the reds a second or even third time. The consensus was that all of the wines were very good.
