This Week's Tasting

Chenin Blanc, The Unsung Great White Grape

July 19, 2017

The Chenin Blanc grape is finally coming into its own. It can be as complex and soil-expressive as chardonnay and as racy and long-lived as riesling, but without that grape's powerful acidity. (Continue reading)

Lighter Reds for a Hotter Summer

July 12, 2017

Prior to the tasting we put last week's reds in front of an air conditioner. This brought them to the right degree of cool-not-cold for drinking on a hot day. Try this at home. Past Tastings

Dry Riesling: Mostly German - July 6th

Most tasters brandished palates for the lighter crisper more acid defined German style riesling so those were the favorites of the tasting.

Barbecue, with Special Guests Akiko Shiba and Chris Wichern - June 28th

The buzz was that the quality of the wines was very good. Perhaps I contributed to a greater than normal amount of double entendre in the repartee, with the  Rhode Island contingent being especially guilty.

New Italians - June 21st

Tasters had a lot of fun and all of the wines were well appreciated last week. The first surprise was how much people really enjoyed the 2015 Gianni Gagliardo Favorita Fallegro.

Rosés... Some Things Favorite, Some Things New - June 14th

Last week we popped open some of our favorite Roses which included Oregon, Spain, France and Italy. We began with the 2016 Castano Monastrell Rosado which showed elements of smoike and earth in a rich fruit format. This was very expressive of the Monastrell character and lots of tasters were impressed with the value.
