This Week's Tasting

Barbecue, with Special Guests Akiko Shiba and Chris Wichern
June 28, 2017

We are excited to meet these two young  Willamette winemakers, she formerly a Tokyo food critic and blogger who learned oenology at Germany's famed University of Geisenheim, he a convert from mechanical background.

barbecue

They not only hand-make their wines but baby them in the sun. Indigenous yeast, no chemicals, no filtration, and constant attention make for wines that are impeccably balanced and nuanced. They do all the work helped by family members and friends.

They will bring with them their 2014 Pinot Noir Willamette Cuvée and possibly single vineyard and rose bottlings.

We look forward to meeting and hearing how their project is progressing.

2014 Shiba Wichern Pinot Noir  Willamette Cuvee 29.99; Mixed Case, 26.99; Case, 25.49

BBQ Wines

Houchart is known hereabouts for its Provence rose, but their white has been a well-kept secret. The Clairette in its blend gives it crispness, while the larger proportion of Rolle (Vermentino in Italy) gives it a spicy tang. The 2016 Houchart Cotes de Provence Blanc gives a refreshing tingle to your palate, and has enough white peach and lemon to go well with most seafood, Provencal or not.

Domaine Fouquette makes classic Cote d’Azure Rosé, with a richness from Grenache nicely offset by spare dry edge that comes from the Cinsault grape. But Fouquette has an extra zest that comes from the spicy tang given by Vermentino and being grown on limestone soils Last year we sold out halfway through the summer. We hope we have enough this year. Try with anything from fish to chicken burgers          . Red

With the great popularity of Pinot Noir over the past years, we are always looking for something really good and reasonably priced. One way to do this is to look outside of Sonoma and Napa. We found the 2014 James Bryant Hill Pinot Noir in California’s Central Coast. We were impressed with the style and the texture of this one. 20% of the wine is aged in French oak and the balance in steel.

One of our best finds this year is the 2013 Zenato Alanera Rosso Veronese. Zenato, one of the finest producers of Valpolicella and Amarone has bottled this homage to the Corvina grape just outside of Verona. Made partially in apassimento style, this shows amazing clarity and complexity for the price and will go beautifully with everything from roast chicken to pork and salmon.

The Costieres de Nimes lies south of the Rhone valley, in Provence. Ch. Virgile’s Cuvee l'Eneide is the winery's magnum opus, a richly oaked fully fruited Syrah dominated blend. It is a wonderful wine, a Rhonish equivalent of a rich Napa cabernet, but with more intriguing spice flavors for grill marinades.

What goes better with steak than quality Sangiovese? Nothing. The 2013 Dievole Chianti Classico is starting to open and reveal its complexity. As many of you know, this is one of Peter's favorite producers in Tuscany and this particular wine is one he could drink every night. It will be open at my Fourth of July party.
