Trimbach - An Historic Icon Unveils a New Grand Cru, plus an Impromptu Tasting of Two Mountains Winery's Reds

Importer Justin Stone provided last week's large turnout with some excellent wines that they found  very pleasing indeed, especially two wines  from grand cru vineyards.
September 11, 2019

The Riesling Frederic Emile showed a very pretty dusty diesel. The Rieslingfrom their new Schlossberg vineyard seemed more reticent, even delicate, with a tracery of light smoke notes. Incidentally both wines showed well for two days later, a token of long life in bottle. The 2017 Trimbach Riesling Classic showed the crisp quality that is the hallmark of the Trimbach style.

Both Gewurztraminers showed a similar vibrant, enlivening acidity that many other producers' versions do not have. Tasters like that a lot, with special kudos for  the opulent reserve Gewurztraminer Seigneurs Ribeaupierre.

The 2017 Pinot Blanc Classic was the surprise of the tasting. A "simple" wine, it provided a lot of bright pure fruit intensity for a very reasonable price.

Two Mountains Winery

We had an impromptu bonus tasting last week. That morning we were visited by Matt Rawn, partner, winemaker of a family winery in Washington's Yakima Valley. His reds were so good, and such good value that we invited him back to show them as counterpoint to the Trimbach whites. Both we and our customers were very happy we did. Open several hours, the wines showed very well

The finest of them, and almost universally purchased at the tasting was their2016 Two Mountain Cabernet Franc Copeland Vineyard which showed as very refined hybrid of the Loire and Bordelais styles of the grape. We have a few bottles left with more coming in mid October.

The other three  wines are arriving in October.

The cabernet sauvignon was almost as good,as the Franc with a bit more breadth, a smidgeon less definition than the Franc. The Merlot, no fruit bomb, had structural complexity and balance.

The multi vintage Cab, Merlot, Syrah etc Hdden Horse Blend, gave a lot of richness for the money.

Two Mountain Hidden Horse Blend No 16; Color: very dark; Aroma: heady Cf influenced, herbal, crisp with a soft edge; Mouth: sweet smooth light lithe, clean, nice mid-weight, not too heavy, clean acid long; Very Good Plus 18.99; Mixed Case, 17.09; Case, 16.14

2016 Two Mountain Merlot Copeland; Color: medium dark; Aroma: heady  spicy, heady rather closed, a berry smoke note nice intensity, lightly oaked, layered cedary center; Very Good Plus 25.99; Mixed Case, 23.39; Case, 22.09

2016 Two Mountain Cabernet Franc Copeland Vineyard; Aroma: very nice intensity good drive, dusty, a sweet cinnamon note; Mouth: clean pretty sweet fruit, very smooth, some lean but very ripe, very pure clean fine acid very long and composed, sweet & linear; Very Good - Excellent  29.99; Mixed Case, 26.99; Case, 25.49

2017 Two Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Copeland Vineyard; Aroma: very heady, sweet  herbal, pretty, nutty, firm, pretty nutty, rather firm; Mouth: clean smooth texture, rather thick, dense fruit, thick, fine tannins, rather long, fine acidity; Very Good - Excellent 25.99; Mixed Case, 23.39; Case, 22.09
