Rosés, from the Ridiculously Cheap to the Sublime
"These rosés are as different as reds and whites" one of last week’s tasters said. She was right.
June 26, 2019
The colors ranged from the almost white of the Cuvee Demoiselles to the deep violet tinged Ch Roquefort. Theflavors also ranged from crisp and tart to full and intriguingly nuanced Domaine Ott Ch Romassan .
With such a variety no one wine stood outs the favorite – many people bought a mixture and all were purchased roughly equally, except perhaps the Rose le Petit Balthazar, because of how good it is at $10
The Chermette Beaujolais Rose Griottes started closed but opened to a delightfully pretty, light wine that flaunted its Gamay grape.
Our perennially popular Ch. Roquefort Côtes de Provence Rose showed perhaps the best balance of round fruit, mineral base and lively acidity.
The Terre Nere wore a light skein of pastel fruit over a tracery of the volcanic rock in which it is grown. It has just arrived from Italy and will flesh out in the very short term.
One person felt that the 2018 Montenidoli Toscana Rosato danced on his tongue. I replied that it had slithered over mine. Whatever its locomotion, it showed itself a wine of deep layering and intriguing complexity. It did want food, very good food to match its worth.
Domaine Ott’s Ch Romassan was hors classe with respect to the others. It needed most of the tasting to unfold itself, but when it did it became fine in a way different from the the Montenidoli, a bit lighter and more graceful, pirouetting on and flirting with the palate.
