Intriguing Flavors from Less Usual Wines
Last week's wines had strong characters, which led to diverse opinions.
May 29, 2019
The largest number of people liked two of the whites. The bold vibrancy of the 2017 Poggio Al Tesoro Vermentino Solosole appealed to many palates. The 2017 Wittmann Scheurebe’s dusty, citrus-inflected flavors and impeccable balance appealed to others. Julien Pilon’s Marsanne was a slow starter but finished the tasting strong, with creamy baking spice-inflected dryness that nicely balanced its piquant acid note.
Opinion on the reds was divided. Some people loved the Domaine des Terrisses Gaillac’s surprising elegance and finesse Mature at four years of age, it had the beginnings of the burnished quality of age. After last week we have only a case left.
The 2015 Azienda Agricole Reale Cardamone Costa d’Amalfi came across as the opposite, young and brash, full of fruit and vigorous tannin. Some people loved that quality – it was too much for others.
The Matchbook Petit Verdot showed distinctive oak notes, especially on first opening. Some found this jarring after the two previous wines. Later in the tasting, exposure to the air better integrated the wood notes. Then its unique strong flavor made it some tasters’ favorite
