Inglenook and Rubicon - An Iconic Napa Winery Reborn
Tasters of a certain age were surprised by at seeing the Inglenook name on the labels of such fine wines .
September 18, 2019
A word of explanation.
As its golden age came to a close in the 70s, Inglenook was repeatedly sold, ending up in the clutches of a wine conglomerate. In what I think of as the iron law of California brand entropy, it suffered repeated “brand extensions” and by the 90s became a label for large bottles of jug wines. Francis Ford Coppola was not able to regain the name Inglenook until 2011, which with his sense of history and tradition, he restored to its original purpose.
With mush risk and investment, and the input of Bordeaux consultant Stephan Derenencourt and under the direction of Philippe Bascaules of Ch. Margaux current Inglenooks are now muich like the originals, tempering power with purity and grace, rivalling some of the best wines of Bordeaux
