Classic Expressive Whites of Kellerei Terlan

Peter writes, "Tasters were happy right from the get go with the amazing quality of the whites from Kellerai Terlan in Alto Adige. Nathaniel (Importer) and BZ (Distributor) led us through this flight of whites that just kept getting more amazing as we went on."

He continues,

We began with the 2017 Pinot Grigio. As I said last week this was to show that Pinot Grigio can actually be a very good wine.  The wine showed real good flavor and aroma with freshness and balance. If you have friends who only drink Pinot Grigio, get this one and you will both be happy. We followed with the 2017 Pinot Bianco. This is their entry level of the most important grape of the region. Slightly more complex and richer, this wine also showed a vibrant minerality.

The 2017 Classico Alto Adigebrought us to the Riserva level wines. This is a blend of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Herb, spice and lots of different fruit jumped out. This was a favorite for many tasters. Then we tasted the 2016 Pinot Bianco Vorberg. Complex and really a lot going on in a wine that compares favorably with the best in the world, the Vorberg will age and stay fresh for years and years.

The 2015 Nova Domus was next. This vineyard also gives us a blend of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is full bodied, complex and multi-dimensional. It actually benefitted a great deal with breathing time. The last official wine was the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Winkl. One of the things Terlan likes to do is make really dramatic Sauvignon Blanc with names that sound a little strange. The Winkl fits that bill. So does the very limited production 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Quarzwhich we also let people taste.  That one comes in at 68/bottle.

Overall tasters were extremely impressed with the very high quality of Terlan. Many thanks to Nathaniel and BZ for joining us.
