Value Bordeaux

Make Your Weekday Wine More Special

In-store, 5 - 6:30pm

Even tariffed, Bordeaux petits chateaux remain great value in Cabernet-Merlot blends, or, for white wine, Sauvignon Blanc. Less familiarly named by their winery and region, rather than by grape, the wines can bring character and individuality to weekday drinking. This week, six wines we found that are great value, some with less usual profiles. All but one or two are still at pre-tariff prices.

Note: these wines will be by special order and arrive in about two weeks.

White

2023 Chateau de Cerons Blanc Graves

Graves is the region south of the city of Bordeaux, named for its gravelly soils. We love this wine for its full, rich, round fruit, which comes from turning the usual Sauvignon Blanc heavy blend on its head. Mostly Peach and quince accented someone, with some Sauvignon Blanc and savory Sauvignon gris, this fills the mouth with generous fruit surrounded by a vibrant acidity.

Aroma: bright and forward, nicely rounded, fleshy, and herbal. Mouth: juicy and forward, nicely balanced, rounded; Very Good Plus $28.99; Case, $24.95

Red

2020 Chateau Lassus Cru Bourgeois Medoc

From the typically Cabernet-rich Médoc north of Bordeaux, Lassus’ hearty, savory aroma belies how smooth and light it flows on the tongue. It's easy to drink and a pleasure.

Aroma: heady, deep and rich, spicy and forward, bright and intense, recedes to bright intensity; Mouth: thick and intense, rich and full, layered, dark currant fruit, fine acid on a light finish; Very Good Plus $18.99; Case, $15.95

2019 Prieure de Beyzac Haut Medoc

This stangy softly spicy, wine was a customer favorite when we first brought it in a year and a half ago. We are delighted to still offer it at the same price in the same fine vintage as we did then.

Color: very dark black intense; Aroma: heady and deep, rather full, fat and spicy, heady and fat, nutty and firm; Mouth: clean light, fresh and herbal, firm, fine acid, vibrant, very long in the mouth, very long; Very Good Plus $19.95; Case, $16.95

2020 Clos Sainte Anne Cadillac

Did GM name its luxury car after the town of Cadillac? There is something special about this red, from southern Bordeaux near Graves. From a region that produces mostly sweet wines, it fills the nose and mouth with heavy currant-like aromas but is light and smooth on the palate.

Color: deeper purple black; Aroma: heady and soft, heady and forward; Mouth: clean, fine acid, fullish, light on its feet, deep, dense, fullish, firm fine tannins, airy, clean long finish. Very Good Plus $19.95; Case, $16.95

2018 Chateau de Cerons Rouge Graves

The chateau that makes the white also makes a big, bold, mouth-filling red from Merlot and Cabernet that flows smoothly over the palate. This is for fuller red meats and cheese.

Color: very dark; Mouth: bright on entry, fullish, fat, sweet ripe acid, clean, fine tannins, on the finish, clean light, fullish ripe; Very Good Plus $28.99; Case, $24.95

2023 Tempo d‘Angelus Bordeaux

The team from Chateau Angelus, one of the most prized and expensive properties in Saint Emilion, makes this one from several other vineyards near that region. With the spirit of the grand vin, it is very much in its style, but not price. It is ageworthy powerful, full of primary fruit. It can be drunk now with decanting ahead, but it will be better tuned in the next year or two.

Color: bright purple red; Aroma: cheerful, bright, and intense; Mouth: bright and forward, clean, fine acid, firm, pretty, colorful, savory and forward, young; Very Good Plus $29.95; Case, $25.95
