Summer Seafood Wine

In-store, 5 - 6:30pm

Seafood and Wine

It's seafood time in New England; Blues, striped bass, and tuna are running off Cape Cod. Lobster was recently on sale at my local market for $7 $7  a pound. (Sorry, out-of-staters, we cannot ship those to you). This week, five whites and a red that will pair very nicely with your warm-weather seafood and fish.

White

2023 Sophie Schaal Alsace Riesling

Primarily from the grand cru, this dry Riesling features softer, rounded acidity that is easy and pleasant on the palate, yet piquant enough to pair with almost any light seafood or fish. dish

“The nose is precise, fresh, and elegant as well as citrusy and indicates a serious mineral structure. Full-bodied, elegant and refined on the palate, this is a very intense, textured and tightly woven dry Riesling with serious grip and a long, intense and saline/mineral finish.” Wine Advocate

Aroma: heady and light, light fresh airy; Mouth: clean, firm, mineral with soft, intense flavor, firm, very dry, clean and airy; Very Good Plus $21; Case, $17.99

2021 Haut Fevrie Clos de la Fevrie Muscadet Sevre et Maine

Muscadet is the perfect wine for Bay of Biscay oysters; it works equally well with those from Duxbury. New producers are improving the region's character and quality, with prices to match their ambitions. Haut Fevrie's single-vineyard offering achieves the former; it captures Muscadet's potential —the delicate balance of acid, fruit, and stone —but without the price. It impressed us; we believe it will have the same effect on you. For all seafood, not just oysters.

Aroma: clean, subdued, rounded acidity, firm, intense, full; Mouth: restrained but rounded, full bright acid lingering minerality, subtle, very long; Very Good Plus $21.99; Case, $18.99

2023 Bodegas La Val Albarino Arantei Rias Baixas

When it comes to seafood pairings, the 2023 La Val Albarino is a great choice, as it pairs well with most seafood dishes. Whether it’s ceviche, grilled octopus, fish tacos, sea bass, white fish, or grilled swordfish, the possibilities are endless. No wonder this wine is on every seafood restaurant's wine list.

Aroma: Seabreeze, fresh laurels and herbs, white stone fruit, and tropical fruit notes. Mouth: nectarines, green apple, kiwi, sea salt, crushed seashells, minerality, balanced acidity with a clean and fresh finish. Very Good Plus $25.99, Case $21.99

2022 Suavia Monte Carbonare Soave Classico

Is Jeff Bezos serving this at his wedding? Its vineyards are just miles away from the Venetian Lagoon and even closer to Romeo and Juliet’s Verona. The wine pairs perfectly with shellfish, a staple in Venetian. seafood restaurants, it’s a fantastic match with lobster, scallops, cioppino, crab cakes, clams casino, baked stuffed shrimp, stuffed quahogs, and countless other dishes. Aroma: Meyer lemon, mango, apricot, gala apples, and orange blossoms. Mouth: Mandarin orange, white peach, crushed stone minerality, medium body, balanced acidity, and long, persistent finish. Very Good Plus $33, Case $27.99

2023 Jean & Sebastien Dauvissat Chablis St. Pierre

Disclaimer. There are several Dauvissat families in Chablis, one of which is famous for its wines, which are also highly sought after and fabulously expensive. This comes from a different branch, but it also impressed us for its richness, breadth, and textural complexity. It's heady and deep enough to go not only with shellfish, but with more richly prepared seafood dishes.

Aroma: heady steely mineral, deep flint, lemony; Mouth: clean and rounded, fleshy with good body, light firm, lemon-inflected acidity, a touch of chalk and stone, long; Very Very Good Plus $40; Case, $34

Red

2021 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria Rosso

Red wine with fish? This Sicilian pairs perfectly with Sicilian seafood. Grilled fish, seafood paella, frutti di mare, tuna puttanesca, calamari, clams oreganata, as well as spicy Asian seafood recipes.

Aroma: Black cherry, blood orange, black raspberry, Mediterranean spices, smoky, and dried herbs. Mouth: Medium body, savory dark and blue fruit, orange peel, vibrant acidity, soft tannins, toasted spice, a hint of smoke, and salt on the finish. Very Good Plus $23.99, Case $19.99
