Six Wines for Your Springtime Holiday Meal

In-store, 5 - 6:30pm

A variety of wines for your springtime holiday or special occasion entertaining. All are moderately priced with different flavors to go with other foods: two whites, a rose, and three reds, including some of our favorites.

Two fine burgundies, a favorite Tuscan rose, a Cotes du Rhone that echoes from a fine producer that evokes their more expensive Chateauneuf du Pape, a sought-after Sicilian red, and a substantial Austrian white.

White

2023 Joel Curveux Pouilly Fuisse

Like the premier crus from this value-for-money producer, this village Pouilly Fuisse over-delivers for its price. It is broad and rich, full of airy fruit, and very satisfying for a moderate price for such a good wine.

Aroma: reserved, pretty & fresh, pear and apple, wet stone, just a touch of buttery oak; Mouth: clean, fresh, pretty fine acid line, excellent structure, with air opens to pear and apple; Very Good - Excellent $29.99; Case, $25.49

2023 Weingut Bernhard Ott Am Berg Gruner Veltliner Organic Biodynamic

This crowd-pleasing Gruner Veltliner was one of Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Best Buys of 2024. It is a zesty, mineral white wine with a touch of spice. Ott is an Austrian wine icon and a major figure in biodynamic winemaking.

Aroma: Lemon-lime citrus, white flowers, poached pears, peppery arugula, and a hint of flint. Light and lively, with racy acidity and a pure, dry finish that makes it endlessly drinkable. Very Good Plus $28.99, Case $24.99

Rose

2024 Montenidoli Rosato Toscana

Montenidoli’s matriarch, Elisabetta Fagiuoli, describes her Canaiuolo Rosato as having the power of red wine with the finesse and cut of a white. It makes it the perfect Rosato for any season and one of our customer favorites.

Aroma opens with raspberries & violets, progressing to orange blossoms and a touch of stonefruit. Mouth: Round, dry with well-balanced acidity and some warm berry flavors. The finish is long, saline, and mineral, which keeps you returning for more. A great food wine like the Rosato can be paired with several international cuisines. Very Good Plus $24.99, Case $20.99

Red

2023 Ariana Occhipinti SP68 Rosso

This highly sought-after wine became a cult after Ariana Occhipinti’s appearance on Stanley Tucci’s Searching for Italy. She is a talented protege of her Uncle Giusto Occhipinti of Cos Wines, undisputedly amongst the very best winemakers of Sicily. The SP68 Rosso is a seamless blend of 70% Frappato and 30% Nero D’Avola. This would accompany a wide range of foods, such as fish, ham, lamb, or brisket.

Aroma: A floral potpourri of rose petals and violets, blackberry & black raspberry enveloped in Mediterranean spices and a hint of smoke. Mouth: Tart wild berries and cranberry fruit, accented with hints of blood orange on the finish. Mouth-watering acidity, fine tannins, dry edge with a mineral structure. Excellent $32, Case $26.99 Very limited

We also have a little of her even rarer 2022 Frappato $52

2021 Justin Girardin Santenay Beauregard 1er Cru

This is one of the best Burgundian Pinot Noirs we have found at its price. It has boldness, structure, and the inimitable character of a premier cru. Santenay’s slight tang, combined with its solidity, makes it a great partner for ham or any pork.

Aroma: Heady and lovely, intense se savory fullish, fat fine acid definition; Mouth: Clean, racy, finely delineated with good backbone, fine acid, tight to start long; Very Good - Excellent $49; Case, $42

2022 Clos du Mont Olivet Cotes du Rhone Vielles Vignes

We stock some of Mont Olivet’s excellent Chateauneuf du Pape and Chateauneuf du Pape Papet. In the Southern Rhone’s fine 2022 vintage, their well-crafted single-vineyard Cotes du Rhone echoes those wines like many other producers’ versions do not. Give it some air to expand, and you will taste how.

Color: medium red black; Aroma: closed reserved, clean, fine herbal, relatively firm, nicely structured, heady; Mouth: fine acid, clean ripe, pretty fine herbal, elegant, Juicy, medium-bodied, and juicy, like a slightly lighter Chateauneuf du Pape; Very Good Plus $23.99; Case, $19.99

Federal Spring Holiday Case  $317
