This week, some wines from some of the finest estates making dry Riesling in Germany, plus one aperitif that is not Riesling. But from one of Austria's most exciting producers.
Lovers of Teutonic Rieslings know these growers. Others will get to try some of Germany's best
Carl von Schubert's Maximin Grunhaus is famous in the Ruwer for his stellar single vineyard wines. His basic Riesling shows the finesse and direct purity his more expensive wines are noted for.
Muscat is known for its French and Spanish sweet wines. In cooler Austria, Heidi Schrock, vigneronne extraordinaire, makes a more graceful version that is delightfully piquant on the palate. Lacking nothing in concentration, it is a nice c
In the Saar valley, Peter and Florian Lauer have been making some of the finest and most expressive wines and refines in the Saar. The Senior Fass 6 is one of their more approachable and forward wines in 2019. It is extraordinary
George Breuer is one of the finest estates. In the richer lands of the Rheingau, Georg Breuer has some of the most sought-after Grand crus. His village Raunthal estate is among his more affordable, with some of the same character of his grand crus.
Likewise, Wittmann makes some very expressive wines in the Rheinhessen. His Westhofener Riesling is excellent in 2020; an outtake of his grand crus approaches their quality at a much lower price.
Ernie Loosen is famous for his semisweet and sweet Mosel wines, but at home collects white burgundies as well as Rieslings. His dry grand cru Wehlener Sonnenuhr is German Great Growth as Burgundian Grand cru, with extended aging in wood, decidedly outside what most others do, but stunningly original.
