In what will be one of our more exciting tastings, we are very pleased to welcome Simone Adams in person this Monday. We have been recommending her AdamsWei for several years now to a warm reception from our customers. Simone is emblematic of a new generation of German winemakers working with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay,
Global warming has expanded the area where those grapes can ripen enough for fine wines to further north of Burgundy. Along the Rhine in Germany, talented growers are making nuanced wines that in blind tastings compare favorably to those of the Côte d’Or. Simone has found and exploits some very Burgundian limestone-rich soils in Ingelheim in the Rheinhessen.
She's certainly one of those talented growers. German wine magazine Wein, in their list of the best German estates, said: “Every wine from Simone Adams makes it clear that someone here knows exactly what she's doing” followed by extravagant and lengthy praise of her Pinots.
We will taste one, as well as two of her fine single-vineyard Chardonnays, and a lesser-known but great-value Weissburgunder, i.e., Pinot Blanc. All are very wines of power, precision and finesse. My notes are from last year. The wines will be more open and expansive now.
2023 AdamsWein Ingelheim Weissburgunder
This Pinot Blanc is unwooded, clean and clear. It will be a vivacious change from your everyday chardonnay. Classic, verging on the succulent.
Aroma: Firm, herbal, intense, firm, clear and rounded apple-pear; Mouth: Bright good fleshy tight acid, rounded, very good material, ripe long; Very Good Plus $24.95; Case, $21
2023 AdamsWein Chardonnay Lohpfad
A single vineyard on mid-slope. Light on the oak it is a wine of layered dimension.
Aroma: Heady and intense, very fine, herbal; Mouth: Clean fine acid, less wood than the 22, elegant, racy, and full, High-toned acidity over ripe fruit with well-integrated wood; Very Good - Excellent $48; Case, $41
2023 AdamsWein Chardonnay Auf dem Haun
Very limited, very rare. We are the only listing in America on Wine Searcher. The vineyard is at the top of the slope. More new oak here, more depth and complexity, long aging potential.
Falstaff Germany “A subtle limestone spiciness meets notes of oak on the nose, hints of yeast and banana, followed by the first slightly iodised tones. On the palate, ripe acidity, the wine flows very naturally and round, all elements seem to merge seamlessly together, a chalky texture leads into chalky-mineral finish. Excellent- Outstanding $69, Case $59
Red
2023 AdamsWein Spatburgunder Ingelheim
This. her not-so-basic Pinot Noir, is the best, most precise and focused Old or New World Pinot that we have tasted anywhere near its price.
Aroma: plummy and heady, nicely rounded and firm; Mouth: juicy, bright rounded fruit, intense, clean acid drive, a racier style of pinot long; Very Good - Excellent $28.99; Case, $24.95
