This week, heartier wines warm you and partner the meats and stews of a New England winter.
2020 Combe Latour Cotes du Rhone Villages Elio
Combe Latour’s Cote du Rhone Villages has benefited from 5 years of age. But keeps its character. It is hearty and deep with good weight and structure that deliver well above our discounted price. It’s substantial, with sold smooth fruit over solid structure.
Aroma: soft fruit, reserved herbal deep plum & garrigue notes; Mouth: solid with good con concentration and deep flavors, bold and substantive with sturdy underlying fine tannins, lingering on the finish; Very Good Plus Was $27.99 $19.95; Case, $16.99
2022 Domaine de Fondreche Ventoux
The vineyards on Mont Ventoux are at higher elevation, making for lighter-bodied wines
Color: medium dark; Aroma: spicy, light and forward, bright, an intriguingly spicy note; Mouth: lightly smooth clean light and pretty, fine acid, clean, rather firm, good length; Very Good Plus $21.99; Case, $18.99
2019 Chateau Lancyre Pic St. Loup
We added a wine we loved that is not of the Rhone although its grapes, two thirds Syrah, one third Grenache, are. Pic St. Loup is a mountain peak in southern Languedoc. Another mountain wine, it is lighter in body but not in flavor concentration and with age has developed an herbaceous minerality.
Color: very dark; Aroma: heady and savory, mineral spice; Mouth: lean and spicy, clean firm, bright intense, tangy and forward, stick to the tongue sweet tannin, long; For character Very Good – Excellent $25.99; Case, $21.99
2023 Domaine Saladin Cotes du Rhone Per El
Owned by the same family since 1422, Domaine Saladin is certified organic and makes wines of purity and elegance, is a wine of quiet perfection with everything in the right place.
Organic Color: light red; Aroma: light and pretty . clean, firm, lean, fine; Mouth: clean lighter toned, fine lean smooth pretty, rather fine clean light and smooth; For poise Very Good -Excellent $29.99; Case, $25.49
2021 Ch Redortier Gigondas
We loved the Redortier estate’s 2020 estate Gigondas. Their 2021 is even heartier with greater intensity it’s a grenache-strah blend, no Mourvedre, it is appealing now with air and will to last for a while.
Color: very dark, very dense; Aroma: deep and heady, very savory, intense heady and full; Mouth: clean smooth very rich very heady, bright and full, hearty clean; Very Good - Excellent $42; Case, $36
2022 Roger Perrin Chateauneuf du Pape
Getting good, characteristic Chateauneuf du Pape at a reasonable price has been increasingly difficult. (f the Donald does not get Greenland it might become even more so.) All our 2022 Clos Mount Olivet flew out of the store last month, but we have found another in its league that we can offer an even lower price. In 2022 Roger Perrin (not to be confused with the Beaucastel family) made a Chateauneuf du Pape is perhaps a shade lighter but has the savory note of brightness that makes the 2022 vintage so appealing and its Chateauneufs so distinctive. It's still a bit young, so give it half an hour to an hour in the decanter and it will reward you with warmth and succulent flavor.
Aroma: heady dense spice, heady full, fat, herbal; Mouth: smooth clean light firm, bright and intense, fine acid tannin; Very Good - Excellent $45; Case, $38
