Two great, unique wines, a white and a red, from remote regions in the north and south of Italy, arrive this week. They are why I love Italian wine.

Southern Italy

A White From the South

We have not been able to get his Caravaglio Malvasia Bianco Secco delle Lipari for two years due to the pandemic and are thrilled to have it back.

Salina is one of the Aeolian volcanic islands off the coast of Messina in Sicily. Nino Caravaglio lives there and makes wine from grapes on nearby Lipari. He is dedicated to producing wines that naturally express this unique land. The focus on local grape varieties, organic farming, and spontaneous fermentation are the three crucial components to obtaining a territorial wine, one that captures the essence of its land. The unique characteristics of this volcanic land surrounded by the sea prevails in the aroma and taste.

The pearl of the history of Salina and the Caravaglio Winery is the Malvasia delle Lipari DOP wine. Nino's choice to vinify Malvasia grapes as a dry white wine was significant. With very high-quality characteristics, it is one to drink throughout the meal, Nino’s exploration continued by testing Malvasia in terms of longevity, producing wines, and obtaining spectacular results highly appreciated by international experts.

Northern Italy

A Red from the North

On the dramatically steep hillsides of western Liguria, just across the border from the French Riviera, Alessandro Anfosso and his son Lorenzo farm the Rossese grape in the Rossese di Dolceacqua DOC area. Lorenzo represents the seventh generation of his family to cultivate this grape that can produce gorgeous wines. This land is extremely hard to work on, and the vines are supported by incredible hand-built stone terraces (E Prie). The vineyards are organic. The wine is partial whole-cluster fermented with native yeasts.

The 2019 E Prie di Lorenzo Anfasso Rossese di Dolceacqua a classic example of this grape, has just come to port. We find floral, meat, dark cherry, and stony black pepper with concentration and structure in an almost zen-like balance. Dolceacqua’s history is one of lost prosperity due to population loss. Here we have a forgotten gem of ancient viticulture reborn.

2020 Caravaglio Malvasia Bianco Secco: Bright straw. White flower, citrus, herbs, savory freshness with a vibrato note of lightly smokey lychee, honeysuckle, pineapple, and peach. Very fresh dry finish. Excellent

2019 A Prie di Anfasso Lorenzo Rossese di Dolceacqua; Deep ruby. Roses and violets, dark cherry. Notes of smokey bacon. Elegance, concentration, and structure with black pepper. Hard to describe, more powerful than Burgundy, less weight than Cote Rotie. Great balance. Outstanding
