Fine Wines From Verona
The area around Verona has the most consistent history of producing fine wines in Northern Italy. Valpolicella and Soave were the first DOC wines in Italy. Tonight we will be tasting three whites and three reds. These all share a particular style and also have distinctive individual character
We will begin with the 2020 Buglioni Lugana Masa. Here Mariano Buglioni took over his family’s historic estate and immediately made conversions to every process that brought the wine into the category of world-class wines. We will then taste the2019 Serego Allighieri Possessioni Bianco. The Sereco Alighieri estate was founded in 1358 by Dante’s son. They have been one of the finest producers in Verona ever since. This wine is an aromatic, elegant blend of Garganega and Sauvignon Blanc. The last white will be the 2022 Pieropan Calavarino Soave Classico. This wine is a perfect example of classic traditional Soave. It does not get better than this.
For the reds, we will begin with the 2018 Allegrini La Grola. It is made with mostly Corvina grapes. Allegrini is located in a prime location in Valpolicella. The family brought the whole area to the next level of quality. This is a wine with a distinctive personality from the La Grola vineyard. Ripasso is a wine style adding richness to Valpolicella by re-fermenting the grapes on the lees of the intensely concentrated Amarone. The 2020 Bugliani Ripasso Bugiardo is a velvety and harmonic wine. Finally, the most famous kid on the block in Verona is Amarone. The best grapes are air-dried for three or four months and then fermented into a very concentrated wine. The 2019 Tenuta Sant Antonio Amarone Castagnedi is balanced and great value for its type.
