Peter writes,
This week, Augusto Gabriel will lead the tasting with six wines from five estates from different historic regions of Portugal. We will begin with an Alvarinho from the Melgaco region. The Quinta do Regueiro estate is owned by Paolo Rodrigues. He makes the 2022 Foral Alvarinho. It's a real beauty with a rich, balanced style that is fresh and vibrant.
The second white will be from the Beira Interior region. Rui Roberedo Madeira owns the Beyra Estate. He uses the region's high elevation cool climate characteristics to make the 2021 Beyra Reserva Branco, a blend of four native white grapes, a wine of real character.
Augusto will start the reds with the 2019 Fonte de Ouro Reserva Tinto from the Dao region. Here, Nuno Cancela de Abreu continues the very long historic family tradition of producing distinctive wines based on the Touriga Nacional grapes. This is a complex and persistent wine. Next, we will taste the 2017 Donna Maria Grand Reserva Tinto from the Alentejo. This area is most famous for wines made with Alicante Bouschet. In this case, owner Julio Bastos blends in some Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Touriga Nacional. There is a lot happening here. The Van Zellers estate in the Douro dates back to the 1600s and was one of the first to produce Port. Now, Cristiano Van Zeller leads the way in creating elegant, complex, great dry red table wines from the Douro. The 2019 Van Zellers Tinto Douro is made with a field blend of grapes and is a great example.
We will finish with a Port. Why not? The 2017 Van Zellers LBV Port is loaded with fruit framed by cedar and spice. We would like to thank Augusto in advance for showing us the wines of Portugal are wines for which we should be looking.
