Two of our favorite wines in Tuscany return this week. The 2018 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina Riserva Bucerchiale and the 2016 Casa Emma Chianti Classico Riserva share an elegance of style and classic expression of Sangiovese at its best.

First, the wines of Chianti Rufina were officially classified in 1716 to be among the best in Tuscany.  The 2018 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina Riserva Bucerchiale is from the best vineyard in the great Pomino subzone.  It is from the 2018 vintage, another in a line of great Tuscan vintages. The current owner Francesco Giuntini is the seventh generation to run the place. Today, his adopted sons Federico and Silvia Giuntini Masseti are taking over. The chief consultant is one of the best winemakers in Italy, Franco Bernabei. These guys are all passionate and dedicated. The farm and winery are certified organic and sustainable. Even the air is cooler and cleaner in this high elevation subzone. Spontaneous fermentation in steel and concrete is followed by aging in large oak barrels. They use solar. Francesco was one of the first growers to bottle 100% Sangiovese wines. Bucerchiale has been 100 % Sangiovese since its first bottling in 1979. Franco makes sure to plant only the best clones, and all the grapes are harvested by hand.

The air is cooler and cleaner at Casa Emma also. Fiorella Lepri bought the property from Emma Bizzari in 1969 and kept the name to preserve its history. She then converted the estate to organic and biodynamic practices. For natural fertilization, pest, and grass control, winemaker Marco Salvadori even introduced geese into the vineyards. We have come to know the wines from Casa Emma for their presence, harmony, and clarity. The 2016 Casa Emma Chianti Classico Riserva shows well-defined high-toned aromatics and velvety tannins. Because of high elevation and winds direct from the Tyrrhenian Sea, Casa Emma sees a long, slow ripening growing season, giving the wine a classic profile and structure.

2018 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina Riserva Bucerchiale:  Bright ruby. Great balance of aromatic compounds with fresh acidity, real finesse, and silky tannins. Cherries, redcurrants, basil, and spice. Touch of salinity and bitter almond in the rich finish. Complex elegance.  Excellent - Outstanding  37/bottle

2016 Casa Emma Chianti Classico Riserva: Bright ruby with purple highlights. Floral and fruit aromas are highlighted by spice and balsamic notes. Velvety tannic and acid structure will age very well. Excellent to Outstanding  37/bottle
