The Wines of This Week's Tasting:

Cracking Croatian Wines
March 22, 2023

White

The 2021 Štampar Pušipel Classic is light and lively wine. 100% Pušipel planted on sandy loam ground in the northern Croatian uplands. The 2020 Kabola Secco Momjan Muscat from Istria is dry, elegant, and playful on the nose. The 2019 Dubrovački Podrumi Malvasija Dubrovačka is from Dalmatia. It is a single vineyard Malvasia Dubrovnik with characteristic aromatics and rich fruit.

2021 Štampar Pušipel Classic Beautiful and clear yellow-green color. The scent is dominated by herbal notes, then of citrus fruits and relatively mild floral admixtures. The taste is fine and rounded while keeping the alcohol desirably mild. The acids are lively, refreshing and have a counterbalance, giving it an attractive sour-sweetish effect. 29.99/bottle, Case 25.49

2020 Kabola Secco 2020 Muškat Momjanski: -Greenish yellow. It is delicate, elegant, and playful on the nose. The aroma presents first with a flowery note of chamomile, followed by notes of acacia honey, candied orange peel, and pineapple. The wine is dry, pleasantly fresh, flavorful, and drinkable. It is balanced, intense in flavor, and has a medium finish. This wine is refined and harmonious with notes of saturn peach in the aftertaste. 31/bottle, Case 26.99

2019 Dubrovački Podrumi Malvasija Dubrovačka The almost lost white variety of the Konavle region, Malvasia Dubrovnik, is once again returning to the Croatian wine scene. Characteristic smell and taste that contains the aromas of dried white fruits, honey, and flowers. 32/bottle, Case 26.99

Red

2017 Ritoša Teran is a predominant red indigenous varietal from Istria. It shows mixed berry fruit with freshness from the coastal Istria red soils. 2015 Bibic Sangreal Merlot results from Alen Bibic's mission to bring North Dalmatian wine to international fame. He certainly accomplished that in quality and fame -after Anthony Bourdain's visit. The 2016 Komarna 7 Plavic Mali is a blend of wines produced by a few different wineries exclusively for Croatian Premium Wine Imports. This is a classic and complex Plavic Mali.

2017 Ritoša Teran: Dark ruby. Aromas of red rose and pepper with mixed berry fruit and pleasant freshness. 32/bottle, Case 26.99

2015 Bibic Sangreal Merlot: From the vineyard in Plastovo, this dry Merlot is produced in a classic method. 24 months in barrique and classic Dalmatian terroir. Dark berries, chocolate, and coffee all show in this full-bodied red. Rounded with fine tannins. 35/bottle, Case 29.99

2016 Komarna 7 Plavac Mali: Blackberry. Plum, raisins, pepper, and chocolate. 24 months in barrique adds complexity and a touch of vanilla in the finish. 23.99/bottle, Case 20.49
