Christmas in October Champagne Sale II
JM Labruyere Champagne Grand Cru Extra Brut - Always a Good Deal, In Today's Market a Great One
October 10, 2021
A perfect storm of climate conditions has reduced the supply and increased the cost of most champagnes. In addition, the problems that COVID has brought to supply chains worldwide have delayed shipments and making them uncertain. Some top-rated brands have become scarce, even unavailable.
We are doing our best to secure enough champagne for the season. We still hope to do our champagne tasting on November 30, pandemic permitting. In case we can't, we will offer a weekly series of our December champagne sales prices. If you have a favorite, you might do well to buy it sooner. If you don't see your choice in an email or on our website, please email me, and I will give you our best sale price.
This week's Sale Champagne: JM Labruyere
It's our best-selling champagne. Why?
It's a grand cru, made from premium grapes, grown on a single estate in Verzenay, one of the best grand cru villages in the Montagne de Reims. Three-quarters Pinot Noir gives it body and depth, a quarter chardonnay a toasty crispness. The grapes are so good that the dosage is minimal, only 1.6 grams per liter
Guide Hachette judges wines blind. They rated Labruyere's first release here better than they did Dom Perignon. "Judges appreciated its golden color, its effervescence, lively and creamy at the same time, and even more its entrancing nose; seductive, intense, vinous, and buttery with nuances of fruit confiture. Finally, its palate is dense and fleshy, expressing ripe and dried fruits, given length by a beautiful saline acidity. A superb champagne to accompany a meal."
Of the current release: "Its previous releases were standouts. This cuvée again interested our jurors. It blends the 2014 harvest and 2013 wines. A lively and gourmet champagne, nicely open with white flowers and citrus fruits, still in its youth. Very Successful"
Proprietor Eduard Labruyere owns a highly regarded estate in Moulin-a-Vent. Pomerol's Ch. Rouget and is the managing partner of Meursault's venerable Jacques Prieur estate. Hachette had named him its Winemaker of the Year in 2018 because of the outstanding quality of Champagne J-M Labruyere.
Nadine Gublin of Jacques Prieur makes the wine. Her technique is impeccable. Late-harvesting and limiting yields make for riper grapes to give the wine more richness and depth. Only the better-quality first-run juice is used. About five years on the lees, more than twice most major brands, add dimension. Its fine quality requires only a minimal addition of sugar. Extra Brut, it can better reveal both grape and vineyard.
A beautifully elegant label and unique bottle show the champagne's quality. Several corporate customers who wanted something more exclusive for their holiday gifts chose this over mass-market clichés last year.
We bring it in direct and can offer it at a price less than many of less distinguished quality. While the mass-market brands have raised their prices this year, we have kept Labruyere at last year's price.
