This Week's Tasting

A Chapoutier Everyday Sampler, including a Michelin 3 Star Red at an Applebee’s price.
February 19, 2020

The tasting and dinner a few weeks ago with Michel Chapoutier’s wines were so successful that we thought we would follow up with another. Michel is a man of many projects.

Chapoutier

This week in the tonier precincts of the One Devonshire lobby we will sample six of them at much more like every day prices then Chapoutiers we tasted a few weeks ago.

Marius, his great grandfather, believed that the best wine was one that made you want a second taste so when Michel conceived a wine from Languedoc for everyday usage he gave it that name. We will taste two. The 2018 Marius white is Vermentino, a snazzy jazzy grape full of ripeness and verve. The Marius Syrah, very much like a Cotes du Rhone if a bit lighter and smoother.

Bila Haut is Marcel's estate in southwestern Roussillon. Grenache blanc-dominated with Marsanne, Viognier, and Vermentino, the Blanc is rich and layered well above its price, a great bargain.

We will taste a Cotes du Rhone that comes from a Chapoutier partnership. He partnered withYannick Alleno , a French wunderkind chef who has taken two restaurants to Michelin three star status. You could fly to Paris or ski in the French Alps to be served the 2017 Alleno -Chapoutier Cotes du Rhone but you could more easily have it at home. Mostly Syrah, It is forceful an pungent We can't promise that it will make your burger taste like filet mignon, but it's fun to dream and certainly fun to drink

A few years ago Michel Chapoutier purchased Ferraton, a venerable but moribund northern Rhone winery. We will try both their white and red Crozes Hermitage. The white is all Marsanne with its melon and cream. The red is Syrah full of spice and crackle.

White

2018 Marius Blanc Vermentino   15.99; Mixed Case, 14.39; Case, 13.59

2017 Bila Haut Cotes de Roussillon Blanc  Wine Advocate “a super value. A blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Macabeu, Vermentino and Marsanne, the 2017 Côtes du Roussillon les Vignes de Bila Haut Blanc is plump, round and richly textured in the mouth, yet it's also refreshing, with vibrant flavors of tangerine zest underscored by briny notes on the finish." 15.99; Mixed Case, 14.39; Case, 13.59

2017 Ferraton Crozes-Hermitage Matinere Blanc, Wine advocate “Hints of toasted marshmallow appear on the nose …, joining modest melon aromas in this largely neutral white wine. It's medium to full-bodied, with a hint of citrus zest on the finish.” 27.99; Mixed Case, 25.19; Case, 23.79

Red

2018 Marius Rouge 15.99; Mixed Case, 14.39; Case, 13.59

2017 Alleno & Chapoutier Cotes du Rhone RougeWine Advocate “full-bodied, layered and rich. Tannic, but filled with dark fruit notes and hints of cola and dried spices, it ends long and velvety. It's an indisputable bargain.” 18.99; Mixed Case, 17.09; Case, 16.14

2017 Ferraton Crozes Hermitage-Matinere Rouge Vinous “Bright violet color. Lucid dark berry and floral aromas are complemented by spice and mineral notes that build with air. Clean and energetic in style, offering juicy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors, a hint of olive and a late hint of spicy cracked pepper. Finishes gently sweet, tannic and quite long, leaving a note of violet pastille behind.” 27.99; Mixed Case, 25.19; Case, 23.79
