This Week's Tasting
Casa Emma Chianti Classico with Importer Jace Chaffee
March 11, 2020
These are wines of grace and structure with cool climate aromatics. The Bucalossi family have owned the property since Fioretta bought it from Emma Bizzari in 1969. These guys truly love where they are and what they do.
One of the first questions I asked Jace was how the hell did you land Casa Emma? The estate is a supremely situated property just south of Castellina in Chianti in the subzone of San Donato in Poggio. The high elevation vineyards form an ampitheater facing southwest. This is in a direct line of the wind off the Tirreno Sea which keeps the vineyards cool in the summer. Casa Emma is certified organic. There are 80 geese who live there. Besides the obvious asset they provide, the geese also control the beneficial wild grasses and munch on insects.
These are wines of grace and structure with cool climate aromatics. The Bucalossi family have owned the property since Fioretta bought it from Emma Bizzari in 1969. These guys truly love where they are and what they do. We will begin the tasting with the Rose. The 2018 Casa Emma Rosa is a distinctive wine which you can tell immediately by the aromas of fresh white peach. Springtime in Tuscany.
The 2016 Casa Emma Chianti Classico will introduce you to the style of these wines. You get floral notes and cherry with a balance between freshness and flavor. The 2015 Casa Emma Chianti Classico Vignalparco Riserva is a single vineyard wine with great personality with balsam notes and energy. This is the vineyard where the geese live.
We will then go to two vintages of the Riserva. The 2015 Casa Emma Chianti Classico Riserva shows power and richness with a balanced texture. The 2013 Casa Emma Chianti Classico Riserva at this point shows more layered flavors. Both of these are excellent.
The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is the flagship wine of the estate. This is the epitome of elegance and complexity.
