Barale Family

I have been visiting the Barale family for years. Their excellent, well-priced wines had only been available in Europe. Only now, thanks to our friend Jace at Vine Farmers, can we get these wines in  America. Unfortunately, quantities are minimal.

Francesco Barale acquired some of the best vineyard land in the Barolo and Barbaresco areas back in 1870 and built his winery in the heart of the village of Barolo. The beautiful 19th century Manor House is still there. He began a tradition to create wines that prize power through grace and are both precise and nuanced.

Today the estate is run by great-grandson Sergio Barale and his daughters Eleonora and Gloria. Everything is still very traditional and organic. Fermentation and aging are still done in large barrels; only native yeasts are allowed with long macerations.

In Barbaresco, the family bought land in Serraboella, my favorite vineyard in Neive. The 2018 Barale Fratelli Barbaresco Serraboellaexpresses the unique aromatics and linear structure of this vineyard. In Barolo, the family acquired land in both Cannubi and Castellero. The 2016 Barale Fratelli Barolo Castellero is a structured floral wine that powerfully expresses a perfect vintage.

2018 Barale Fratelli Barbaresco Serraboella: Garnet ruby. Pleasant, intense aromatics with violets, ripe cherry. hazelnut and earth. Dry, velvety palate with elegant and persistent tannic structure. Excellent 53/bottle

2016 Barale Fratelli Barolo Castellero: Garnet ruby. Ethereal ripe red fruit with roses, spice, and underbrush. Velvety-rich integrated tannins. Long balanced finish. Excellent 67/bottle.
