Gabriele Mastrojanni, a Roman lawyer, founded the estate in 1975 on virgin land south of Montalcino. The potential of the site quickly became apparent. Especially following Andrea Machetti's appointment as winemaker in 1992, Mastrojanni has become one of Montalcino's finest producers. The Illy family of coffee fame took control of the estate several years ago and has invested to improve quality. This is a grand estate on the rise.

'Donkey's Back is the name of this vineyard at the crest of a hill. The vines were planted in 1975. This vine was made only in the best years. 6,000 bottles were produced in 2013.
