The Wine Spectator and Italy’s Gambero Rosso have praised Atgianno’s Brunello di Montalcino as the best red wine in Italy and the world.

Argiano has been quietly changing the game with its Rosso di Montalcino. Many Montalcino producers have made their Rosso from fruit of younger vines, which they considered not good enough for Brunello di Montalcino. This fruit is not ideal for aging in barrels over 24-48 months, as required for Brunello and Brunello Riserva.

Argiano has differed in its approach by dedicating a prime vineyard site capable of producing fruit for world-class Brunello and using the grapes to make their Rosso di Montalcino.

After tasting this wine, I was struck by its intoxicating aromatics, vibrant fruit and spices, and silky and supple texture. It has all the elements of a great Brunello, minus the price tag. This is a gateway to Brunello that you should try.

Aroma: Dark cherry, wild strawberry, rhubarb, nutmeg, clove, mint leaf. Mouth: Marasca cherries, wild red berries, warm baking spice, crushed stone minerality, balanced acidity, fine tannins, with a satisfying medium finish.  Excellent  $43, Case $37
