2020 Joel Curveux

France's Guide Hachette has cited a Joel Curveux Pouilly-Fuisse as among the best of the region every year for the last six, a remarkable achievement for a tiny family-run domaine, but his wines are almost unknown in this country

Handed down from father to son for four générations, Domaine Curveux is a family-owned vineyard in Fuissé, in the heart of the Pouilly - Fuissé appellation. Currently, run by Joël Curveux and his son Guillaume their vineyards comprise 8 hectares of vines spanning the three villages of Fuissé, Solutré, and Chaintré, with 6 ha of Pouilly - Fuissé.

The majority of their vineyards are 1er cru under the 2020 Maconnais classification.

No publication has yet rated his 2020, but we were very impressed when we tasted it from what is shaping up to be an outstanding white burgundy vintage, the rare combination of vibrant acidity, concentration, and ripe fruit. It will drink now- (we recommend a bit of airing) and will age for several years.

The 2020 white burgundy vintage is outstanding, but it is very small. That and a disastrous 2021 vintage have forced most burgundy producers to raise their prices significantly. The workhorse Latour Pouilly Fuisse is now at least $40 a bottle.

How were we able to offer this excellent Pouilly at such a low price? Its lack of presence in this country does not interest the broad market. Also, it came to us bypassing some importer's markups.

This is an extraordinary bargain for such a fine appellation. It probably won't last very long.
