2020 Grillo Iole Schioppettino di Prepotto
A Well-Priced Cellarable Italian Red You Can Drink Now
October 7, 2024

Anna Muzzolini and Grillo Iole, her small family estate, are passionate about native grapes, which they craft into unique, elegant wines. Their vineyards are in Prepotto, Friuli, Italy’s northeast-most area at the border with Slovenia. There, the rare regional red wine grape Schioppettino was rescued from extinction and is native to the town.
Wines from Schioppettino are rare, but both distinctive and elegant. They are deeply colored, perfumed, and peppery, with flavors of wild fruits, firm but fine tannins, and fresh acidity, indeed a treat for those who enjoy Italian reds.
Aroma: Intensely rich spices of cloves, cardamom, and peppercorns are followed by a floral potpourri, red plum, and pomegranate. Mouth: Marked by splendid freshness of mixed berry fruit elegant tannins, with spicy returns in closing finish. Very Good-Excellent
