2018 Maison l'Envoyé Willamette Pinot Noir

"Delicious, Lovely, Well Balanced – Terrific"
April 8, 2021

Maison L'Envoye

We just got word that a sensational new Willamette Pinot Noir is on its way.

Maison l'Envoyé and its allied brands have been a fine source of Oregon Pinot Noir for us for the last seven or eight years. Their Alit Willamette became our best-selling pinot noir and most reordered ever because of its extraordinary price-to-pleasure ratio. (You who are fans, we have just a few cases left) Their finely calibrated single vineyard Rose & Arrow Pinots are some of the finest we have tasted, bar none.

L'Envoye have very good vineyard sources with a talented winemaking team overseen by the talented and visionary Mark Tarlov and Louis-Michel Liger -Belair who presides over one of the finest estates in the Cote de Nuits.

The Maison  L'Envoyé Two Messengers Pinot Noir  has pleased our us and our clients for several vintages now.  Destemmed  and fully aged a year  in French barrels, it is deeper, more complex and layered than the Alit.

We took notice when critic  Alan Meadows raved about its new vintage.

Writing as Burghound, he is perhaps this country's most comprehensive and incisive crtics on burgundies and their stylistic cousins in the New World. Although he tastes the good to the best he is more measured than most in his ratings and commentary.

He wrote about the 2018 Two Messengers with praise that I have only seen him use for far more expensive burgundies:

“A notably ripe and somewhat somber nose offers fine complexity on the dark currant and cherry scented aromas. The delicious and refined middle weight flavors possess a lovely texture while delivering fine complexity on the linear, youthfully austere and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is terrific and well-worth investigating.”  Outstanding

Josh Raynolds is also reliable. In Vinous he chimed in:

“Bright-rimmed ruby. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, cherry cola, licorice and potpourri, and a spicy nuance emerges with air. Pliant boysenberry and cherry liqueur flavors show fine definition and tighten up slowly with air. Shows lingering dark fruit character on the persistent finish, which is framed by youthfully chewy, slow-mounting tannins.”

The 2018 Two Messengers will please pinot sophisticates and more casual drinkers . It will drink now –(I recommend opening it ahead) and improve in the cellar.

We ordered as much as we could. Our first shipment arrives today. I only hope we can get enough. Special prices are good only this month.
