Janin Moulin a Vent

A little over a year ago we welcomed three fine cru Beaujolais growers to the store for a very popular tasting. Eric Janin's  Moulin a Vent, estate wine was one of the most purchased at the tasting.

No wonder, it was a classic wine of the Beaujolais appellation with the biggest, most complex wine due to its granite and alluvial soils. It showed firmly structured, with a broad  blackberry fruit; generous enough to drink now but with firm structure that will enable it to age for several years. I recommend opening an hour ahead and decanting to let the wine unfold.

French wine publications unanimously name Paul Janin as one of the top estates in all of Beaujolais.

The Revue du Vin de France: “Location and vine age age are not everything. You have  to have the good farming sense  and the finesse of analysis of an Eric Janin to give birth to great concentrated and fresh gamay.”

Bettane & Desseauve rates Janin , “a very high quality producer, one of the glories of the French vineyards”

He is a classicist and does all the right things to infuse his wines with the  strongest sense of soil and place. He farms organically with very low yields. Most of the vines are 40 to 70 years old. The grapes are sorted and then vinified for 12 to 15 days. The wine is then aged for 10 months on its fine lees and then micro-oxygenated to soften the tannins.

In 2017 frost and hail cost Eric Janin 80% of his crop, so he could not do single vineyard bottlings and some of his finest vineyards grapes went into this cuvée.

What the critics said about this wine

Bettane & Desseauve “A pretty Moulin-à-Vent from an exceptional terroir with soils rich in manganese. This quality, together with careful work of the vine, vinification in the rules of its art and a maturing in oak casks give this cuvée intensity, expressiveness, breed of soil and especially a pretty seductive side…...a kirsch nose is surpassed by a velvety texture  and firm tannins which mark the finish Now a benchmark “

James Suckling “beautifully flinty, savory edge here with iron-like, savory aromas, as well as red and dark berries. The palate has a very strong, ripe and deep core of plums and red cherries. Very powerful.”

William Kelley Wine Advocate

“pretty aromas of raspberries, cherries, rose petals and bergamot. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with a chewy chassis of tannin, a lively core of fruit and a flavorful finish.”

Last year tasters paid 23.99, a bargain compared to many  lesser, more expensive Moulin a Vents.  Now the importer has to make room for the 2018s so they have offered us what 2017 s are left. e offer at 19.99, 16.58 by the case. It will appeal to both connoisseurs of cru Beaujolais and more general drinkers,

Bettane & Desseauve advised its readers to “Hurry up, there won't be enough for everyone!" of Janin's "exceptionally full 2017s.” At our sale price that will certainly be true.
