2017 Francois Villard Croze-Hermitage Certitude

Discounted Syrah of Depth and Character
March 17, 2020

Francois Villard

Francois Villard  is a man after the Federal Wine heart. Underneath a mischievous exterior he is profoundly serious about his winemaking. The Revue du Vin de France summed him up:

“ Although troublemaker François Villard does not take himself seriously, his work should  be considered with the attention that the greatest deserve. Each vintage inspires him, both to baptize his wines with word play  and to create new ones. This explains the multiplication of his labels, which has enough to make the most eclectic of wine lovers lose their cellar Latin.”

Cellar Latin? This chef turned winemaker speaks the Rhone dialect of Syrah, Viognier, and Marsanne with impeccable precision, Case in point, This Crozes-Hermitage  he dubbed Certitude.

It comes from three plots of sandy clay and round stones in Mercurol  just to the west of famous  Hermitage. . Villard harvested with whole clusters to give backbone and and gave it 18 months in old oak for texture.

The result, certainly a quinessential Rhone syrah with a savory above a thick, broad layer of dark fruit

Guide Hachette  wrote of this wine

“Purple and profound, the color announces a complex and intense nose where red and black fruits blend with a touch of licorice and spicy smoky notes of wood. Fresh in its attack the mouth reveals itself just as intense and perfumed made up of powerful chalky tannins that add to the whole.”

Josh Raynolds, Vinous “Inky ruby. Perfumed aromas of fresh, black/blue fruits, cracked pepper and violet are sharpened by a smoky mineral flourish. Sweet, spice-laced cassis and cherry flavors show very good depth and an energizing spine of juicy acidity. Plays power off of finesse smoothly, finishing with supple tannins and lingering blue fruit character”
