2016 Tasca d’Almerita Rosso del Conte
The First Great Sicilian Red
December 12, 2022

Back in the mid-1900s, Giuseppe Tasca changed the face of Sicilian wine. Sicily had been known as a producer of bulk wine shipped to France and Central Europe for blending. However, Giuseppe knew that great wine could also be produced there. In 1959 he planted the San Lucio vineyard at his Regaliali estate in the mountains of north-central Sicily. The vineyard is bush-trained Perricone and Nero d’Avola vines. In 1970 he bottled the first ever Rosso del Conte to rave reviews.
The 2016 Tasca d’Almerita Rosso del Conte is from a perfect vintage in Sicily. The wine is amazing, exuberant, vibrant, and energetic. It strikes an ideal balance of fruit, structure, and elegance. Over the years, Rosso del Conte has developed a reputation of consistently remarkable quality and style. The vineyard is a high elevation with loamy sand and calcareous skeleton soil. Because of the balance given by warm days and cool nights, the fruit provides excellent phenolic maturity. The wine is always full-bodied and complex and ages exceptionally well.
Giuseppe’s son Lucio continued the wine-making. Now his sons Giuseppe and Alberto run the ship. This wine is from a very special place. The first time I visited, I thought I was in the Garden of Eden.
2016 Tasca d’Almerita Rosso del Conte: Intense red driven fruit. Cherries and balsamic mineral with a beautiful eucalyptus note. Fruit, structure, and elegance with great balance and velvety tactile texture. Outstanding 75/bottle
