2015 Occidental Pinot Noir Catherine’s Cuvee
An Old Friend Shares a Limited Amount
May 8, 2019
It was nice to see Kate Kistler this week. She had not been back to Boston since she worked at Federal almost two years ago.
Notable as that might be on her resume, Kate is now known as the co-worker with her father Steve Kistler, who created the winery that makes some of California’s best pinots and chardonnays. He has sold that winery, keeping the best and coolest western Sonoma vineyards where, with Kate and her sister Elizabeth, he grow grapes and make wines under that Occidental label. I tasted some very fine upcoming 2016s and 2017s with her.
We were able to get just one case of the very highly allocated Occidental Catherine’s Cuvee (yes, named for her) which is normally reserved for exclusive restaurants. Kate said that 2015 is just as good as the fine 2016s. Lisa Perrotti Brown agreed in the Wine Advocate:
“ medium ruby-purple color and wonderfully floral nose with notions of red roses, lavender and lilacs over a core of cranberries, Bing cherries and rhubarb plus touches of tilled soil, sage and mossy bark. Medium-bodied and possessing bags of finesse in the mouth, the palate features incredible freshness off-setting the bold fruit with a firm yet finely grained texture and amazing length.”
