2015 Muga Rioja Seleccion Especial Reserva
The Wine For All Seasons
October 30, 2020
If someone from Mars landed here tomorrow and asked what Rioja is, I would give them the 2015 Muga Rioja Seleccion Especial Reserva. Muga is a family owned winery in Haro in Rioja Alta in the famous station quarter. It was established in 1932 by Isaac Muga and Aurora Cano. They have gone from strength to strength ever since. The winery today has extreme respect for tradition without ever missing a chance to make things even better.
The vineyards are in the mountains around Haro, all planted with native varieties. The climate has influences of Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental. The winery is incredible and Muga actually coopers all of their own barrels.
This wine is traditional and made with hand harvested grapes. The fermentation is spontaneous and this is aged in French oak for 26 months, 40% new. Here we have a step up from the tremendous standard Muga Reserva due to selection of the very finest grapes and barrels for the Seleccion Especial.
2015 Muga Rioja Seleccion Especial Reserva: Deep dense ruby. Red berry and black cherry fruit aromas with pepper spice framed by forest floor and roasted coffee beans with subtle oak. Blend of four grape varieties, mostly Tempranillo, gives balanced complexity and makes this very versatile. Very long with velvet texture. Excellent (Was 45/bottle) Today 40/bottle
Special six pack: 6 bottles of the above for a special price of $216 (36/bottle)
Special case: 12 bottles of the above for a special price of $408 (34/bottle)
