2014 Ch d'Or et de Gueules Costieres de Nimes Qu'es Aquo
A spiced red of mature, delicious character
July 31, 2019
Diane de Puymorin is a woman of vision, passion and taste, three prerequisites for making fine wine; She has devoted her career realizing the potential greatness of her region. But she works in Costieres de Nimes, one of the more obscure Cotes du Rhone communes, names her estate and wines in Occitane not a dialect au courant, and has chosen to sculpt (sculpt she does) her wines out of less than well-known grapes.
Case in point, her Qu'es Aquo from 80 year old carignan. The name means “What’s That.”
Delicious is what it is. Barrel aging has rounded carignan’s sometimes astringent acid tang, rounding, not losing its pungent character. It enters the palate with bright red cherry plum and leaves it with a lingering savory finesse that invites a second glass over some grilled chicken or beef.
It deserves its original $35. Were there more adventurous Occitane -speaking wine lovers, it might well have gotten it. There were not, which is why you can get it from us for less that you would pay at the winery. Very limited
