2014 Bodegas La Horra Corimbo
Power and Elegance in Ribeira del Duero
September 14, 2020
“Intense cherry color, ripe fruit, dried herbs, creamy oak, powerful, spicy with ripe tannins” Guia Penin
Ribera del Duero is Spain's equivalent of Napa Valley. There Tempranillo sometimes blended with cabernet or Merlot make some of the biggest boldest of Spanish reds. They are wines of richness and structure like Napa cabs, but with overtones of leather or tobacco They are for red meats & cheeses.
Tempranillo, also is the base for the wines of Rioja. There the modern Bodegas Roda has become distinguished for wines that are both among the more powerful and delineated of the region. They wanted to expand to Ribeiro del Duero and after careful research decided to partner with a family that farms older bush vines the La Horra subregion. They established Bodegas La Horra and in 1999 released the first Corimbo.
It is all 25 year old vine Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo. Careful winemaking and chalk and limestone soils give La Horra’s wines a cut and finesse not found in many other wines of the region. After hand harvesting, the grapes are fermented in a combination of large wood & stainless steel vats followed by 14 months aging in 80% French oak & 20% American oak.
Corimbo retains the signature Roda power and precision in a wine that has the breadth of a more Bordelais-styled Napa Cabernet, but with the nutty overtones that distinguish Tempranillo.
“The very good 2014 Corimbo…. on its own, it would have impressed me with its power and elegance ... for those that prefer more powerful wines, this 2014 would come highly recommended.” Luis Guttierez , Wine Advocate
