2014 Bodega Numanthia Toro
Prestigious Historic Incarnation of Tinta de Toro
October 18, 2021
Bodega Numanthia is the iconic winery of the rugged region of Toro in northwest Spain. Forbes magazine calls it Spain’s best red wine. The area’s viticultural history goes back to ancient Roman times. Christopher Columbus brought Toro wines to America with him in 1492. The grape variety here is a particular clone of Tempranillo called Tinta de Toro. As usual, the 2014 Numanthia Toro is a powerful and intense wine with many complex aromas and flavors and many nuances emerging as you go through the bottle.
The high elevation vines along the Duero river are planted free-standing, enabling them to grow deep large root systems to get enough water in this dry region. These are all prephylloxera vines and are very old. Numanthia is fanatical about Toro history and terroir. They have vines in all of Toro’s eight separate terroir regions so that they can blend wines with amazing complexity and richness. All of the vines are organic and give some of the lowest yields in Europe, giving us wine of uncommon texture, vibrance, and beauty.
The forests surrounding the vineyards ensure a wonderful and sustainable biodiversity.
