Value Winter Warmers

We promised wines that had the weight to satisfy in the coldness of winter. We did not anticipate how varied they would be and how varied the response would be to them.
January 16, 2019

There was no single favorite. People were attracted their wines according to their own taste and preference.

Some liked the rich dense fruit of the 2014 Barone Cornacchia Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. While not a fruit bomb, it satisfied many tasters' craving for richness and. Of note, we have sold out of the 2014, but now have the 2016. There is little, if no difference.

Others preferred the 2016 Torremoron Tempranillo Ribera del Duero. It had a fair amount of tannin, more like a Napa Cabernet but with overtones of the bright cherry fruit of the Tempranillo grape from which it is made.

Both the 2017 Penya Cotes Catalanes and the 2017 Domaine Cabirau Cotes du Roussillon had a pronounced but delicately nuanced herbaceousness that make them great companions for herbs winter stews. Quite a number of people preferred one or the other. They differed less in flavor than the Cabirau's having more richness and weight. Both were very attractive.

Quite a number of people liked the 2015 Nieto Senetiner Blend's subdued Bordeaux blend. Although mostly malbec, it had a subdued rich sweetness all of a mature St. Emilion. It was very popular.

The 2014 Haras Cabernet Sauvignon Hussenet Gran Reserva not so much. While it did have the sweet richness it did have a pronounced slighty funky herbaceousness frequently found in Chilean cabs. Some found that attractive, but more did not.

The Chambers Rosewood Muscat was a sweet plus to the tasting. Those who like sweet wines founded incredible value in a port like wine at our reduced price. "Maple sugar candy," exclaimed one taster. And so it was.
