Three Craftsmen of Cru Beaujolais

Last week proved that Gamay is a deliciously friendly grape that at the same time can give the nuance and finesse of Pinot Noir. Each of the three Beaujolais master craftsman provided different interpretations and their seven different vineyard sites showed wines with distinct personalities.

 Three Craftsmen in Beaujolais

Maxime Perrachon’s wines were most popular at the tasting by a slight margin. They were concentrated and intensely fruity wines from Julienas and two more structured wines from Morgon. Most tasters gravitated to the balanced 2016 Julienas Roche Bleue and especially the 2017 Julienas Les Vignes Centenaires, a wonderfully dense and concentrated wine from a single vineyard of hundred year old vines. This was perhaps the richest and most concentrated wine of the tasting. I like it very, very much.

Raphael Chopin’s wines from Regnie were broader and softer. People liked the current vintage 2017 Ronze and its reserve level Caprice. But there was also a lot of interest in the two 2018 single vineyard barrel samples he brought with him. Both 2018 Ronze and 2018 Les Braves were redolent of dark fruit, very low acid, and rich broad, mouth-filling flavor. Both will be sumptuous in the short term.

I have liked Eric Janin’s wines for years. His 2017 Moulin A Vent Les Vignes du Tremblay was everything that the commune should be. Structured, herbaceous, a balanced wine for food. It was popular also.

We tasted all the wines below. Those with tasting notes in bold are in stock now. Others are only available by special order only. Maxime Perrachon’s wines will arrive in about two weeks. Others will come in about eight weeks.
