Single Vineyard Montepulciano with Some Chaos

We tasted the wines last week blind. There were five Italian reds from all over Italy and one red that was from somewhere else.
March 6, 2019

Last week the wines were all really good and in spite of being made with the same grape, all really different from each other. We began with the 2011 Valle Reale Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vigneto di Popoli. This had quite rich flavors. We followed this with the 2010 Valle Reale Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vigneto di San Calisto. This had some similar flavors but the style was all elegance.

We then tasted two wines from Le Terrazze in the Marche. The 2015 Le Terrazze Rosso Conero Riserva Sassi Neri is also 100% Montepulciano and showed a bit tighter structure. The complexity showed through. The 2012 Le Terrazze Chaos is a blend of Montepulciano , Syrah, and Merlot. The wine showed rich plum fruit and black pepper.

The 2011 Garofoli Rosso Conero Riserva Grosso Agontano was quite rich in flavor and the aromas included some notes of dried fruit. We followed with the 2009 Garofoli Rosso Conero Riserva Grosso Agontano. This was rich in flavor and also more open.

All of these wines shared favorite status with perhaps a nod to the 2009 Garofoli which was the most dramatic. The wines were elegant and expressive and well appreciated.
