Savory Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc in various guises last week, with an emphasis on European -style crispness and finesse.
August 9, 2017

We grouped the four French Pure Sauvignons in order of increasing weight and intensity. 2014 Goisot St. Bris Exogyra Virgula (the Latin name is of a group of extinct marine shellfish that form and inform the soils of St. Bris, was less usual . From Burgundy, it was more delicate and  and lissome. People liked it but preferred the three Loires:

The 2014 Henri Pelle Menetou-Salon Morugues Le Carroir combined elegance and power. The  2016 Claude Riffault Sancerre Les Chasseignes had perhaps the most finesse, while the 2016 Girard Sancerre Les Monts Damnes  was the most powerful and smoky. Each had its fans; The Pelle was slightly the most purchased at the tasting.

The 2015 Ch de Seuil  from Bordeaux was the odd man out. Its main grape was Semillon, often mixed with Sauvignon Blanc there, gave it a more exotically fruity overtone. which really appealed to some, but was not liked as much by those with palates for crisper wine.

Mt. Beautiful Sauvignon Blanc from Canterbury on New Zealand's east coast also stood out for its more forward fruit but was more akin to the French. People liked that it did not have so much of the Grapefruit-gooseberry character that you find in the more common Marlborough Sauvignons.
