Last Week's Tasting

More Exotic Summer Wines
June 6, 2018

The favorite wine of the tasting would go very nicely as a barbecue wine also.

The 2014 Quinta de Ventozelo Douro Reserva was a solid, deep and spicy blend of grapes, principally Touriga Nacional usually used for port. It had the port richness in a dry wine.

Two lighter reds each had their partisans. The 2016 Gurrieri Frappato di Vittoria from Sicily and 2016 Clos Fornelli La Robe d'Ange from Corsica were both light and very fragrant, very pretty wines. Early tasters preferred the Frappato. With time exposed to air, people noticed an airy but intense note of violet or strawberry in the Clos Fornelli and it became the preference. Both are interesting and exotically flavored wines to be served lightly chilled in warm weather.

Some liked the heady spice of the Lagrein - some others did not like its intensity.

Despite Peter's disapproval of a California interpretation of Italian white grape varieties, several tasters were intrigued by the delicate almost floral herbaceousness of the 2016 Massican Annia. Others liked the power and weight of the dry 2016 Albino Rocca La Rocca Cortese.

Please pass this on to any friends who are wine enthusiasts!
