This Week's Tasting

Springtime and Admins Whites and Lighter Reds
April 25, 2018

We waited until now to be safe in saying that spring has arrived. Tonight we will be tasting some interesting springtime whites and lighter reds.

Peter writes,

The sustainably farmed Honig Vineyard and Winery is a good place to start. The 2017 Honig Sauvignon Blancshows character and balance with plenty of bright citrus. Chenin Blanc is generally in less demand than Sauvignon Blanc but has just as much history and worthiness. Perhaps the most famous destination for seekers of good Chenin Blanc is Vouvray. Old friend importer Jon-David Headrick has brought us the 2016 Cave de la Bonneterie Vouvray La Craie. This is grown in white chalk soils and shows crisp and delicate flavors. The third white is from Puglia and has been a favorite of ours since we were first able to bring it in. The 2016 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca Val d’Itria is a wine of great character with an impeccable balance of fruit, spice and minerality.

We will begin the reds with another old favorite. The 2016 Brigaldara Valpolicella continues the tradition of offering a very interesting and high quality wine for a great price. The red fruit core has lots going on around it. Speaking of value the trend lately has been for Pinot Noir prices to go up. Imagine our delight in finding an Oregon Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for a great price. The 2014 Tangley Oaks Pinot Noir Willamette Valley shows refined fruit, lively acidity and a long finish. Now with the third red we might be straining the definition of “light” as a descriptor of wine but we really think this is a wonderful example of its type and so are sneaking it in. The 2015 Warwick Estate Pinotage Old Bush Vines from South Africa shows plenty of dark fruit with spice and cedar. Let’s say this one is medium bodied.
