This Week's Tasting
Mucci Imports With Stefan and Linda Vaja
March 15, 2017
This week we welcome Stefan and Linda Vaja, owners of Glassier Winery in Alto Adige. They will show us three of their very fine wines from the Sudtirol. Meanwhile, their importer Nick Mucci will pull a few tricks out of the Mucci Imports portfolio. We will have Lambrusco, a unique Sicilian white and a naturally made Nero d’Avola.

We will begin with the 2009 Cantina Della Volta Lambrusco di Modena. This wine is Metodo Classico and made with 100% Sorbaro grapes. It is bright red in color with persistent tiny bubbles and finishes bone dry. We will follow this with the 2015 Cantine Gulino Pretiosa Albanello. Doctor Gulino is the only one today who bottles a 100% Albanello. This is an ancient grape variety that was almost lost completely because of phylloxera. The wine is rich and very fresh with a saline finish that screams for seafood, particularly oysters.
Then we will allow Stefan and Linda take over with the 2015 Glassier Pinot Bianco. This is also a richly flavored and textured white wine that one gets with the great wines from the area around Bolzano. The first red will be the 2015 Glassier Schiava. This is maybe the perfect summer red and we will be serving it slightly chilled. This brings out the bright berry fruits and nutty character in the finish.
Next it’s back to Sicily for the 2015 Terrasol Nero d’Avola. Actually the owner’s son Stefano Poidomani was supposed to be here but missed his flight. So this is a typical naturally made Sicilian red from vineyards near Modica. Great Value. The last wine will be the rich and spicy2012 Glassier Lagrein. Lagrein is one of the signature red grapes of Alto Adige.
